Hello, gang ;D I just got home from an amazing Todd Rundgren gig at ABC tonight, wean rushes to meet me at the door with the news she got her exam results by email earlier. She's through with a high B grade average and now has a guaranteed place in Honours come September. ;D It feels like a small miracle, given the paucity of ambition in her urban Glasgow state secondary where teaching standards are pitched to the lowest level of attainment. Damage done much earlier in these kids' lives... But again, a huge big thanks to everyone who pays taxes in Scotland thus allowing my girl and thousands of others to take university places, free of tuition charges that so many of us couldn't otherwise afford. Never taken for granted. Nae thanks needed roly, well done frae us though

Never taken for granted. Nae thanks needed roly, well done frae us though Au contraire, Nota, these things aren't said enough! ;D Chez Rolo are fortunate indeed... I've been so saddened this week by a case I'm dealing with at w*rk. A 15 year old girl has joined one of our extra-curricular music mentoring projects (and boy does this girl have a talent for drums and percussion! she's AMAZING!). Anyways, she plays in the Glasgow Schools Orchestra and has applied to, and been accepted for, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Youth programme. So far, so great. Except, the girl's from a very deprived area in the East End; her father's a school janitor, her mother a home-help. And much as they've supported their girl, they simply can't afford the fees for the course. Because she's still in mainstream education, the fees are £2000 a year. This is a hard-working, decent family, me and the team are broken-hearted that she might miss this wonderful chance. So.....down but far from out, I've written to my colleague, principal of RCS, who himself was brought up in a mining town in Fife and rose to be one of the world's finest orchestral trumpeters. Hopefully a solution can be found: either from funding via private trusts or---as I've cheekily suggested--a fee waiver ;D ;D ;D I've a few more ideas up my sleeve if that doesn't work

Its tough on girl. No scholarships or firms willing to sponsor her eg a drum manufacturer?

Have they tried the "Fraser of Allander" fund? Perhaps worth a try.

The Weirs in Largs are now well recognised helpers in such cases, for youngsters with great talent struggling for funding to carry on their learning

All good suggestions, particularly that last one of the Weirs, who have done such fantastic things with their good fortune.
I'm hoping for the RCS fee waiver-- but next step is indeed private trusts and foundations, of which there are quite a few set up by rich philanthropic Scots.
One of my own youth projects is supported to the 'tune' (!) of £10,000 by the Robertson Trust, which was set up by two hugely wealthy elderly sisters who inherited the Robertson whisky business (Edrington Group).
They like so many others support young people from disadvantaged areas (with a particular focus on Drumchapel where Edrington's based) mainly in sport and arts pursuits.
Brand sponsorship is incredibly difficult to come by now, Oz, unfortunately. I've done many a commercial deal in my time (Premier drums being one of them) but altruism/charity's a rare commodity -brands require ever heavier advertising in exchange for their investment.
Anyways, hoping the Principal will look on this case kindly..fingers crossed!

Just catching up with all this, and I am VERY pleased for young Ms R and perhaps even more so for this music girl, who could so easily have missed her chance. Well done, Rolo, for riding to the rescue. Happy, Happy!

The god-daughter passed her 3 Highers ( at C) to go with the two at A she already had - she's well chuffed as it means she can now attend Stirling University as a sponsored elite athlete, she's sponsored by the SFA - she plays fitba for Scotland & Rangers
Unfortunately she underwent surgery today to repair her cruciate ligament in her knee - means out of playing football for months until its fully healed
The SFA are late into this type of thing, she's had offers and places reserved for her at 2 USA Unis since she was 12

Good to see that we're (finally) sponsoring promising young athletes, even if late in the day.. Hope she's doing well after surgery and will go on to great things. Best wishes to her for her time @ Stirling Uni and beyond. Meanwhile the young girl drummer I spoke about earlier on the thread is now in possession of a Wolfson scholarship to the Conservatoire and starts her course in September. Wolfson Trust likewise puts errr. trust in our talented young people. All good ;D
