Hi everyone, A wee update. Toni's been studying at the Conservatoire for a year now. Weekends only, as she's still in mainstream school. She now has her own public YouTube channel with demos of her drumming/percussion. What's more, as a result of being at the RCS, she's also taken up piano and after only 6 months has got off to a flyer. What a natural musician she is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7jyY1oqRBo&list=UUyp4wUBl0jBKo3tQ2f4yc2w&index=1AND in other news, Ms Rolo passed all her 3rd Year Hons coursework and exams, all good B's and (ahem) a couple of A's. So she goes into 4th Year in a couple of weeks, on track for a 2:1 if she keeps up her current standard. And I'll say it again, because it bears repeating. She, Mr R and I are SO grateful to everyone who grafts and pays tax to allow Scottish students not to be burdened by £9000 a year tuition fees. It should always be about the ability to learn. NOT the ability to pay.

great news Luved the u tube! Question why should poor tax payer have to pay for the training/education of people who are going to make a motza? Well if ye invest in their education, you'll get the higher taxes from their higher earnings back in the future - a highly educated workforce is much better than one that isn't In retail terms one could call it a loss-leader maybe On a slightly different tack - in australia are 100% private schools allowed to be charities?

Hi Nota
Quick answer is No .. but some are. The one that jumps to mind is the Royal School for the Deaf and Blind donations are tax deductible.
School fees to religious (ie Catholic, Anglican, Pressbutton etc) and independent schools arent tax deductible. They are classified as "schools" and have lots of $$ regulations
Though it does get very complicated but thats the gist of it

Even the top private schools like Fettes etc are in on this charity lark, think the ame applies down souf for the likes of elton etc too

as I say its complicated here.
The Commonwealth Government passes a huge wad of $$ to the states for education of which part is based on a per head basis of kids generally about 1/3 of costs. The actual figures change more often than a pom has a bath so must be taken with a pinch of salt.
The same per head amount of money is passed direct to Non-Government schools ie so much per pupil they get no help from the State the difference paid in fees.
All the big independents have "scholarships" for bright disadvantaged kids from the country eg One of the best schools in Australia takes in 30 kids a year from Far North Queensland, mostly Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. All expense paid including Airfares
PS one of these kids ended up a Governor of South Australia

Just shy of four years since my OP on this thread, I have some news. Ms Rolo and her fellow students were told their final results would be notified later today (Tuesday). I SO wanted to be with her when she found out later today. So it was pretty unexpected when she texted me in the wee hours of Saturday morning there, that the results were out. She was at her work down Ashton Lane, I was at Hamlet's Jazz Club in Riga, Mr Rolo was out prepping the sound system for the Mela in Kelvingrove Park. That was a plan that didn't quite come together, then The news is that Ms Rolo, come June 30th, will graduate MA Hons Psych 2:1Have to admit I shed a tear or two when I got back to my hotel room: so far away from where I wanted to be. It feels damned good to be home safe now, with Mr and Ms R and I reckon we could all sleep for at least a week
