I was quite pleased to see him there. And I'd be very surprised if they contrived to sit together. Doesn't matter. Major's an old man, his time is past. I daresay he and Eck can have some very interesting conversation... and why not, relaxing at jolly old Wimbers.

Eck's statue is a wee bit like a Bud Neil cartoon character, but then I suspect would find that amusing !

Indeed... some very interesting conversation: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14093640Thus spake the old unionist "My own view on Scottish independence is very straightforward: it would be folly - bad for Scotland and bad for England - but, if Scots insist on it, England cannot - and should not - deny them."

Ach come on, Heidie, would you rather we huddled north of Hadrian's Wall and just chucked stuff over the border? Eck's a good ambassador for our country IMHO, and refusing to be polite in social circumstances gains nobody nuthin ;D That statue is terrible btw.

getting a lot of air time here generally without comment. SBS had a 5 minute piece on on its news last night, seemed to be pretty factual without an opinion

Look, wtf just happened? Everyone with an IQ in double figures in Scotland knows the SNP manifesto last year included the pledge to hold the referendum in the second half of the parliament term. Had Scotland's voters not endorsed that, as well as their other policies, the SNP would not have gained their large majority. We REJECTED the values of Labour, LibDems and Tories in huge numbers. So nothing has changed since Cameron kicked off this offensive. Except that some in the Souf have maybe woken up to the fact that this is a serious issue all of a sudden Granted, the SNP has work to do in the next year or so to give us the bald facts on how independence will be managed. Nobody in their right mind'd deny that. Some folks of course might vote against independence because they fear they might personally be fiscally worse off or because they're wary of change. Fair enough but I say let's decide when we have the facts, rather than the scaremongering. And anyway, I would willingly contribute a bit more if it meant we lived in a country of strong values; a mix of entrepreneurship and ambition tempered with a social conscience and a sense of fairness---and importantly, nobody's puppet. We don't all want to be part of a thrusting BIG country that enters into illegal wars as if to show their world dominance; and we don't all want to be on the treadmill of ever-increasing capitalist extremism either. The Scots are highly intelligent and well-informed, despite the stereotypes we're seeing reinforced yet again in the media this week. It's OUR call, nobody else's. <steps off soapbox..> ;D

Interesting, Oz, thanks for posting it.
Looks to me like a botch job by some journalist who's just cherrypicked bits of all the various reports here and cobbled it together. It's fairly accurate in the main but there are some assumptions I'd challenge.
Alex Salmond has 'fuelled' nothing. He's merely responded to a sudden offensive by David Cameron. Nothing has changed here, we all know the SNP promised to hold the ref in the second half of the parly.
Also these references to the anniversary of Bannockburn in 2014 are the figment of some hack's imagination. Much is being made of the fact the SNP chose to wait till the second half. Well I'd counter that by asking what mainstream Unionist party in power DOESN'T time general elections to their optimum?
I can assure you that no mention of this anniversary has been part of any SNP campaign planning.
The SNP of COURSE want to have a few years of government under their belt, to prove their competence. It would have been silly to go earlier before they'd had a chance to put their policies (the ones we voted for in great numbers!) into action.
And finally. The SNP I joined last year and have worked for since are overwhelmingly Pro-Scottish. Not Anti-English.
