I trust everyone'll remember to cast their Council votes tomorrow STV applies (single transferable vote) meaning you don't mark an X against one chosen candidate--that invalidates your vote! You vote in order of preference, 1, 2, 3 etc. If you prefer you can just vote for one candidate with a 1 though. However in Glasgow the SNP are offering two candidates in each ward meaning, if you want to, you can vote them 1 and 2 in order of preference. Any SNP voters who need a lift to the polls should call their local SNP office. Polls are open 7am till 10pm and the votes get counted not overnight but during Friday with early results from noon onwards.

I have been cheered in the last couple of days to see a couple of SNP posters in my "vote for a dead monkey if it has a Labour badge" ward.

Franchise duly exercised. Good luck to the SNP. It's terribly dispiriting - depressing, scary - to think there will be many today who cannot get clear on the concept, and will make a complete hash of their paper. It's not complicated!! ya bams. Have to say, I really don't think that any ballots marked clearly with just one mark against one name - whatever the mark is - should be taken as invalid. A preference has been expressed and clearly indicated. If it's understandable and not an obviously deliberately spoilt ballot, I think it should be counted. As was related many years ago....a Jewish candidate was standing in a Glasgow ward. Some bright spark took it upon themselves to mark their paper with a swastika next to the candidate's name - whereupon the returning officer decreed, yep, that's definitely a mark against a name... The mark was duly counted as a vote for the Jewish guy.

Latest thoughts from friend of the biased BBC, John Curtice, professor of politics at Strathclyde University, who "said there were several potential outcomes.
He said: "The first is that the Labour party manage to regain control of the council.
"The second is that the SNP themselves gain overall control of the council - that's an outcome that is only going to happen if the results for the SNP are very much to the high end of expectation.
"Probably the most likely one is that Glasgow becomes a permanently hung council with neither Labour or the SNP having an overall majority."
Bets...?

Hahaha, so not only is John Curtice a Labour rent-a-quote, he turns out to be a professor of the bloody obvious as well. Such profound comments. I does laugh.

Early polls suggest record low turnout in Scotlandshire.
A splendid display of apathy at fever pitch.

I know Celyn ;D I coulda come to the same blinding conclusion myself and I'd only have charged them a fiver.... I've not heard any reports of the turnout yet but apparently it was expected to be pretty low. I'd like to hope the SNP will just edge a victory in Glasgow as their supporters are likely to turn out more than disaffected Labour ones I think.

Labour retain overall control of Glasgow City Council. Eck's ceremonial unicorn ride into George Sq has been cancelled. Sturgeon and Hunter posted missing. GETITRIGHTUPYE ! Gie yoursel a rest, Stan SNP have made significant gains with 424 councillors in total to date, while Labour's vote remained fairly strong on 394 overall at the current reckoning. We all know Glasgow City Council's a long-entrenched Labour heartland and yes, the SNP didn't quite manage to take control this time. Well, Rome wisnae built in a day Personally I'm finding lots to rejoice about. The Condems have been destroyed in Scotland for obvious reasons. And while many councils are under no overall control (yet, till the deals are done on local coalitions) the point is that the vote has been spread between two main parties, therefore there will be strong opposition in every single one of em. That has to be good. Particularly in Glasgow City Council. That particular gravy train just hit the buffers. Ooopsadaisy! Crow all you like over one micro-point.. It's not my fault you can't see a bigger picture developing and get your teenage kicks from being so deeply unpleasant... Actually that's an insult to teenagers........ Face the fact, Stan. You're a troll. Barred from so many fora over the years yet still trying to make an impact by helicoptering in on those that'll still have you. If it wasn't so sad it'd be hilarious. Actually, it's hilarious....

Now there's no chance that were will be onny proper investigation into Glasgow City Council and its dodgy deals. Oh well, truth will come out eventually. Unlikely criminal charges would be brought even if there were a 'proper investigation'. Senior Strathclyde police officers, including the post of chief constable, assistant chief constable etc are appointed by the Strathclyde Police Authority, many of whose members are Glasgow councillors. The chairman and vice chairman of the current SPA are Labour councillors. Given the nature of politics, I've no doubt there would be 'discussions' between prospective candidates and SPA councillors along the lines of 'we'll do this for you, if you do this for us'. So, senior police officers are beholding to local politicians for their positions, and therefore under their influence. But the influence local politicians have over the police is even stronger due to the fact that Glasgow City Council allocates millions of pounds of council tax money to Strathclyde Police. This money is discretionary, meaning they have no legal obligation to provide it, so it can be withdrawn at any time. In recent years, one of the leaders of GCC threatened to reduce the amount (I think it was Purcell), which would have meant redundancies in the police force. Maybe the police weren't delivering enough to promote his agendas. So, even if Labour councillors in City Chambers were completely replaced by SNP councillors who hadn't been party to such political shenanigans, it seems unlikely there would be a 'proper investigation', given that former Labour councillors have the potential to embarrass senior police officers. The police knew Purcell was hanging out with major Glasgow drug dealers and gangsters and was a heavy user of cocaine, supplied by them. Of course, he was never even charged, never mind prosecuted for it.
